Handle duplicate URL problems & potential risks

We are dealing with a big site migration to BV5 from our old platform. Most everything has gone smoothly, but we're worried about problems with duplicate content on the new site.
Our product URLs are setup like
domain.com/PRODUCT-NAME__1234.aspx
Of course, the system only looks at the __1234 ID number to pull in the appropriate page. This means that any of the following also return the exact same content:
domain.com/product-name__1234.aspx domain.com/OTHER-NAME__1234.aspx domain.com/asdf/PRODUCT-NAME__1234.aspx
Somehow Google is already including versions of our pages with different capitalization schemas, causing us headaches.
The biggest risk is a shady competitor or SEO company attacking our site by adding thousands of alternate links resulting in huge duplicate content problems.
These issues are a concern to us because it results in search engines crawling tons of duplicate pages, and reduced indexation rates. Is there a possible fix for this? Or is implementing the canonical tag our only and best option?
Is this problem addressed in BV6?
Thanks for the help.

Aaron,
Thanks for the quick response. I know you proposed some good changes awhile back (http://forums.bvcommerce.com/default.aspx?f=101&m=61181).
Are there any improvements to these problems in BV6?

BV6 allows you to have multiple URLs and one primary URL. The non-primary URLs are 301 redirected to the primary one.
