I have a type of product where a customer can order a sample and I was trying to make a single variant, but it seems you can only have 2 or more variants (especially with radio buttons).

The problem is that there is only 1 variant (the sample) that is needed for all 10,000 products - if I make a dual choice radio button like Order Product and the other choice Order Sample, then I have 1 product and 2 variants and 3 SKUs total (and 10,000 extra database entries).

Currently, there are no workarounds I can see - If I make one of the shared choices null, the validator generates an error saying an option was not picked and the customer cannot select an item.

Maybe this needs to go on a wishlist: a single variant option using a checkbox.

Anyone know of some sort of work around? It would be nice to just have 2 SKUs (e.g. "SKU0001" & "SPLSKU0001" )

See the attachment image: When the Add To Cart button is clicked, the validator says no variant is selected (when it is set as a null variant), even though it is selected.

This is where kitting can be utilized.

Unless it's likely that more than one product will be ordered, what's wrong with making 'no' the default and 'yes' the affirmative choice? (I assume there'll be no need for 20 products to ship with 20 samples.)

Can you offer a sample as an up-sell?

Have you tried making the choice 'not required'?

Matt, I'm not up on kitting yet... Can kitting keep 20 samples from shipping with 20 products?

An upsell would save database space. I just thought it would be nice to have products with single variants where one selection would be the product itself and the second would be the product's only variant. That's what I thought "null" values were for.

The product variations don't have a "not required" option, only the "product modifiers". The samples have their own inventory, when they run out, the variant option would disappear.
The problem with 2 variants, is that the product itself has to have a SKU too (which makes uploading and managing inventory problematic).

I'm messing with the validator to see if I can get it to ignore validation when someone picks "No", though, this may screw up other products.

Mitch, I'm trying to get over to a kit setup for a client but it's holiday time so we're focused on the task at hand! Nuts here :)

When I was testing, I had setup kits which were deposits on vehicles (include performance options, extended warranty, etc.). The other setup was a BOGO setup. Both worked as intended.

I'm in the middle of an upgrade at the moment, if I hop over to a kit setup, I'll do some more testing and provide some screenshots.

I attached a screen shot for further explanation.
In the picture, the "No" option points to another variant, I wanted "No" to point to the main product (I tried the "Null" option, but it doesn't work as I thought it might)

Null means that it can't be selected by a user. Used more for instructional purposes like "Select a Color" or "Choose Size" in a drop down menu.

OK, I was just looking at the inventory and noticed that when there are variants, the main SKU has no inventory, so my search for a single variant is moot here.
I'll just stick to the Yes/No variants and change the SKU for the "No" variant on a custom product exporter (I have to write one anyway, this is not a big deal now).
