I was wondering if anybody has setup wholesale customers and if there is a way to allow those wholesale customers to input purchase orders or shipping options that a normal customer of the site cannot access.

Thank you,
Britt

Britt,

Both of your requirements will require some customization. First you will need to create a wholesale "group" in the admin (under the People tab). Then you will need to modify the payment methods to only show the PO payment method if a customer belongs to the wholesale group. Ditto for the shipping methods.

Britt,

As long as you don't mind your retail customers seeing "Purchase Order" as a payment method -- you may have to deal with the occasional imbecile I guess who uses that -- but as Aaron says, you can set up a Price Group for Wholesale customers. And with Andy Miller's shipping add-on, you could easily create shipping methods that are only visible to those members.

Joe,
Are you sure that you can use Andy's Shipping Rate Rule Providers to show/hide a shipping method based on a customer group? I don't remember seeing that functionality in there...

I wasn't sure either, so I just checked. It is in the Order Rules Provider (but not in Package Rules...probably because I could not think of a way to get the customer from within the shipping method). It is called Customer PricingGroupId, so you have to know the ID (which is easy to find). It would look like this:

When Customer PricingGroupId is equal to 1, hide this method.

What was I thinking doubting the Shipping Rate Rule Providers? They unequivocally rock!

In looking at it, Price Groups is not a criteria that is in there -- but you could use a trigger in the customer's address line --- such as put (WC) after the address line (for Wholesale Customer) and then trigger a "Hide This Method" when the Destination Address contains "(WC)"

Joe,
As Andy said, Price Groups does exist when using the Order Rules provider. I had been looking at the Package Rules provider.

this is how we formatted the payment options on a site. I'd say that 90% of purchases are B2B (with many repeats), haven't gotten a phone call to modify the presentation in a long time.

Shipping has always been a pain, but it's always been negotiated via phone call before processing and/or updated after the order is placed.

Matt's got it. I made these simple changes and stopped the confusion dead.

(I'm still in the camp that says P.O.'s aren't a payment method....)
