Curious as to what the market is like for bv consultants? Is there a strong need for more developers to provide consulting services?
I appreciate any feedback/comments, thanks!

Not much of a market specifically for BV consultants I would guess. There might be a market for shopping cart add-ons although I'm not sure how large of a market. There are some consultants on these forums that are BV experts. That would make them more productive and competitive for their e-commerce clients. I recommended BV to my client as part of a package evaluation... |

Do not have a lot here but the ones I do are long term. Always advancing their sites with features for the customer and increased sales revenue. |

Kim does your shopping cart software have a lot of changes from the core BV Commerce software? It seems that so far on my first project with BV Commerce 5.74, I've made several source code updates to support different things.
I wonder how easy it would be to upgrade to newer versions of the product when they're released? Do you usually try to integrate newer versions, and if so how is that experience for you? It seems to me from all the different versions that folks are running and all the different versions of components like Andy Bloc's Rate Rule Calculator, that the BV Commerce architecture doesn't lend itself to maximum backward compatibility...how has your experience been with that? |

I appreciate any feedback/comments, thanks! I believe the market is relatively small compared to open source software, but there is definitely a need for smaller merchants to work with developers. We regularly turn turn projects because they aren't a good fit for our company, but they would probably be perfect for a single developer. I always recommend those merchants post their project on the forum. |

Shan, Where possible, we make our customizations in a way that does not alter the BV source. However, we almost always make changes to the core as well. In those cases we comment our code changes in a very consistent way which makes future upgrades easier. In the end applying a service pack always requires comparing source code using a comparison tool. It's not that bad, though. A side benefit of this is you get to see everything that has changed between versions which can be helpful to identity any new problems that may occur after an update. |

Yah that's what I've been doing as well. I usually document all changes to custom software like that and document the user interfaces that have been updated...makes it easier to integration test everything when doing future merges...ideally it doesn't have to happen very often I guess. |
