I am going to have to agree with the fact that fixed width layouts often look better, but fluid layouts can be more useful to those of us with very wide monitors. And if you have a design that lends well to fluid layouts then it can look pretty good(just check out site like slashdot.org -- does anyone still read that?). Wouldn't it be nice if we could just have fluid width layouts with max-widths? If it wasn't for ie6 then this would be more possible. Then you wouldn't have to worry about huge amounts of white-space, large gutters, etc... but your site would still scale down to 800X600. I guess we can only hope that the uninformed update to IE7 quickly because I have to admit that if I was practically blind and had to use 800X600 on a 22 inch monitor in order to see anything, I would be highly annoyed by sites with 1000px wide fixed widths. :-) I guess it is all in who you market to. |

The lack of max-width and min-width support often makes my life a living hell. There are ways around it sometimes, but hacks are hacks.
If you're going to design at 970px, no matter who your audience is, it's always a good idea make sure it's usable without scrolling in an 800x600 environment.
I've experimented a little bit with javascript resolution detection for showing/hiding things and overriding styles, so that might be an option for some, if done properly. |

The consumer side of BV Commerce 5 is designed with 800x600 as the target resolution. The admin side is designed with 1024x768 as the target resolution. It all depends on your audience I guess.
