We're basically looking to "hide" a subcategory from the left hand column, but have it appear on the main category page when clicked. We're doing this to keep the side links from being 10 pages long but still need the flexibility of organization in the subs. An example of this would be the promotional portfolio sub which falls under a subcategory off the main site. Right now the list is pretty small, but will likely grow to 30-50 items. Paging is a nightmare and with the google redflags for duplicate meta tags we're trying to limit the number of category pages. Ideally we'd break off the individual items like the <SPAN id=Anthem_ctl00_MainContentHolder_lblName__><SPAN id=ctl00_MainContentHolder_lblName> Gemline Color Block E-Organizer into it's own sub-sub of same brand products. Is our best bet just hand coding out a custom category template that we use on a category by category basis? It would be great in future versions if we had the ability to hide certain categories from just the left hand menu.

This is built-in, if I'm reading your post correctly. Categories are visible in left stack, subs don't cascade in left stack but are visible on the category page. Set the category and sub-category controls as below: Then in Content Tab, edit the category block to "Show root Category Only" in 'Display mode'.
