Working in Edit Category of BV 5 test cart . . .

My assumption is that Category Page Titles can be different from Category Names. However, I have changed the Page Titles of several categories, and no matter what text I input, the end result is that the Page Title always matches what I have in the Category Name field. I can suppress the Page Title by unchecking the Show Title checkbox, no problem. Appears to be a bug, but in searching "Page Title" on the forum, I have not found anyone else who has reported it.

"Name" shows on the shopper's screen above the grid or list of products. This category name shows in the site's navigation menu.

"Page Title" shows in the browser title bar at the top of the screen (browser page).

I'll assume they are different so you can load some search terms into the page title for Google. I do. Don't know if it works, but couldn't hurt. ;)

My test site is not working as Mitch describes. For instance, I have "Pear's Classic Gift Tins" in the Name field and "Design Your Own Tin" in the Page Title field. The Page Title text does not appear anywhere on my site or browser. Every reference is to "Pear's Classic Gift Tins", including the browser title bar. Is there a setting or something that could be causing this?

Mine works as Mitch describes -- do you have "Show Title" checked for your categories?

Java, post your url, we'll have a look shopper-side. Have you tested in another browser?

My mistake guys. I do see what Mitch described. I was looking elsewhere.

My confusion lies with the "Show Title" checkbox. I thought because it had the word "Title" in it that it referred to and controlled the "Page Title", but it actually refers to the "Name" field. Doh!

Java,

Nice site. I prefer seeing search terms in the header bar though. I'll assume people won't search for "Design your own tins".

Also, this is the term that shows in the favorites list when your site (or page) is saved by a shopper. I hate having to rename a site's title when I save a bookmark. "Welcome to my site..." or "Your best place to buy....." isn't very informative in a favorites list.

I'd suggest " >description of the page's product or URL<, Gourmet Nuts, Gift Tins, Corporate Promotions, Cashews, ..."

Mitch - Thank you, and good advice on the site title. I think BV is pretty powerful software. Unfortunately, like a lot of software, not every feature is documented, so learning the ins and outs will take some time. It's folks like you and Birdsafe who contribute quite a bit on the boards that really help newbies get up to speed more quickly. Thanks again!

Joe and I are a rarety here. We are both business owners who stuck it out for sp2 and it's birthing pains - many bailed out or got tired of waiting for a solid platform, a real shame. Most people on the forum are designers and/or programers. IMHO you need both to build a good, easy to use business tool. Sometimes (most times) when software works the way a programmer thinks it needs to work progress stops, but a real user wouldn't give it the time of day.

Case in point is the arrows used to sort/order products. Sort 50 products one by one with these arrows....yikes. Sometimes products need to be sorted on a category page by size, color, function, photographic appeal, demographic, cross-compatablity etc.

Many features in BVC are functional, but clunky or a PITA to use on a daily basis - ie: too many clicks to print an order/packing list on paper. Imagine using a rotary phone to dial 100 phone numbers into a database. Sure the dial works as in input device, but.... the designer stopped because it works.

As you go along, add some requests for improvements of your own. We'll all benefit if only a fraction of the ideas are implemented.
