One of our clients reported that when running a sale or order discount offer that gift certificates were being discounted. Their concern is that the gift certificate is essentially a payment method, not a product, so the discounted gift certificate could be used to pay for a discounted product order, essentially allowing a customer to get a double discount. Thoughts?

I buy discounted gift cards to restaurants all the time (say what you will...lol)... $15 for $25, $20 for $50. However, it's pretty much a guarantee that we're going to spend the delta on booze and dessert.

In my web travels, I haven't come across the ability to buy discounted gift cards for merchandise. Either I'm not looking in the right place or it's a bad move for retailer.

Nobody else has an opinion on this?

Personally I feel that this is a bug, or at the least, should be an option in the admin where a merchant can set whether they permit sales and discounts on gift certificates.

Aaron -- to me it works as is -- I have a storewide 10 percent sale, and that sale DOES NOT apply to a Gift Certificate. You are discounting merchandise not the gift -- the sale will be given when the person uses the gift certificate.

The bug with Gift Certificates is the amount is counted TWICE in your sales volume - when someone purchases one, the amount is counted in your total, when the person uses one, the amount is counted in your sales total again.

Joe,

What version are you running? I'm testing with 5.6.
