I have mostly been ignoring this issue, but since my product page doesn't have any navigation except the breadcrumb trails and top menu, it makes sense to try to fix it.

Basically, nearly all of my products are in multiple categories. When I go to any product page, the breadcrumb path is a valid category, however it is almost never the most appropriate ("main") one. I don't see a way to edit the default breadcrumb trail for a product. So how can I get more control over the path that it displays?

Just to be clear, the category pages all appear to be choosing this path correctly, it is only the product page where it is not. In some cases I navigate to the product through its "main" category, and the breadcrumb trail doesn't even appear.

I am using BV Commerce 5.6.

The only 'issue' I've seen with the breadcrumb trail when a product belongs to more than one category, at least when the breadcrumb is set to only show one trail (rather than all), is that if you come to a product without going through categories (e.g. homepage link, search, etc) the breadcrumb has to choose a trail to show, so in those cases it may choose the trail you don't want it to display. I wouldn't really call this a bug, though.

I like how some e-commerce sites list the categories that a product is filed under on the product details page. Some do so near the footer of the page. That plus the breadcrumb thing can help to ensure that the user can navigate to a category that they are interested in shopping in.

I found the problem by stepping through the code. I had previously found the WebAppSetting for BreadCrumbTrailMaxEntries and set it to 1, but there is another setting called AlwaysShowAllProductCategories that has to be set to false (0) in order for the breadcrumb trail to work correctly on the product page with only 1 entry. It wasn't a bug, it was a misconfiguration.

Yea, I was thinking about adding the list of categories to the product page, too. However, I have recently added some category templates with custom criteria in which all products belong to and then they are filtered through the category page. Maybe I will have to rethink the way I implemented that functionality - perhaps just make these "categories" into standalone pages with the same functionality as a category page. Then again, it would probably be easier to filter them out by making a custom breadcrumb trail control.
