(Normally I'd look to see if there was another post that had this answer, but the forum search is broken [Unable to load XML File : /forums:])
Older version of BV have a short description for products that is displayed on the product listing page. Our store is going to have very very long product descriptions that include graphics and version comparisons etc. We obviously don't want this to show on the listing page. In the product edit section, there's only one description section field - is there really only a single description option?

It appears so. If not the hosted version you could modify or perhaps this will be updated in the future. Definitely needed. |

Off the top of my head this may be a work around.
Combine the short and long descriptions in the one description field. Like so <div id='shortDesc'> Content </div>
<div id='longDesc'> Content </div>
Then use JavaScript or jQuery to hide content where needed depending on the page displayed. |

If you have an extremely long set of text/images etc. for description we recommend that you use the new "Info Tabs" feature to create structured tabs on the product page. These tabs are fully rendered in the HTML and visible to search engines. We use Javascript to create the tabbing effect but search engine spiders see the entire page at once.
We decided to go with a single description field because we found that the vast majority of our customers were just duplicating the same text. Other than very long details I'd like to understand your need for the short description vs. long description. I'm open to suggestions to bring it back or create a better long term solution if the info tabs won't work for some reason.

Makes good sense using the info tabs. |

My BV5 Experience:
Short Description Field for Product Feeds (can be argued to use Meta Description but not a fan of character limit)
Short Description Field for Detailed List Displays - had to remove 255 character limit to allow for HTML Unordered lists and basic formatting. |

Matt,
Thanks for the feedback. It sounds like you don't actually need a "short" description but rather a feed specific description. I'd consider using a product property field that could be used in feeds rather than taking up the main store description. It sounds like you could add a "Google Description" property to your products and then modify the Google feed to pull in that field.

Yes and no. remember though, BV5 guy here right now. Needed: Short descript ion required for detailed list display (BV5 - see image attached), allow for HTML, removed 255 character limit. For the google descript ion concept, that would be useful. What I've setup for feed specifications is along the lines of your suggestion through product properties. properties for feed product names (truncate the names to avoid long title wrist slaps), MPN's, UPC's, Brands (as Manufacturer doesn't always equal the Brand), google product categories, internal categories, etc. etc,.
