I am seeing if anyone has done anything with giving Customers the ability to add shipping insurance to orders as an Option?

We typically absorb the cost of this but, would like to pass the costs on to our customers.

Thanks

I want that too. If it's not in the next BV SP I'll try to implement it as a plugin.
BV. Will next SP have Insurance?
Thanks,
Corneliu.

If anyone already has an add-on for this, it might be Andy Miller with Structured Solutions. He seems to be the shipping guru around here.

My DHL provider includes an option so that the merchant can decide to add insurance (what DHL calls asset protection), and base it on the site cost, the site price, or the adjusted price. The cost of the insurance is included in the shipping cost. The choice of including insurance is made by the merchant when the shipping method is created.

Is this what you are asking for, but for UPS, FedEx, etc?

Or are you asking for a separate line item in the order called "Shipping Insurance" for example, that can be deleted by the customer? If this is closer to what you want, I think I would add a checkbox to the cart page allowing your customer to select insurance and if they do, then simply add a line item to the order.

Hello Andy,

I am looking for the second option you described. I figured I would have to put some kind of checkbox on the order page and let the customer choose whether or not they want the package insured.

I was just wondering if anyone has done this yet?

I have not had a chance to look at the code behind on the order process yet. I guess its time to get my learning cap on. =)

Noah (at Resposio) would know if any of his clients have a feature like that.

Do you anticipate any resistance from your customers? I have personally rarely been given the option to add shipping insurance. When I have, I decline, because I figure I will just decline the package if it looks damaged and request another if it never arrives.

Shipping insurance seems to protect the merchant, not the customer. It seems unusual to put that choice into the hands of the customer.

As a followup to this discussion, it appears to be illegal to charge a customer for shipping insurance in some cases, depending on state law.

Personally, I would avoid going in this direction since it will almost certainly generate illwill.
