Hi,

Has anyone implemented shipping restrictions on any of their stores?

We sell certain items that can't be shipped abroad (e.g. items containing food or seeds or that are simply too heavy) and need to be able to alert customers (or prevent them from going through the checkout) that the item they've added into their basket can only be delivered in the UK for example, or only to Europe.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Jason

I have customers using my Rule Providers to create shipping methods with product-based restrictions.

You can inform your customers about the restrictions in the product detail page. The trick is to inform them about the restriction after they try to send it anyway. One way I saw mentioned in this forum was to set the shipping cost to a huge number along with a suitable message:

$9,999.00 - We can not ship seeds outside the UK

Hi,

I downloaded the trial and installed it and it looks good. But I have to admit i'm a little confused as to how I would actually go about setting that up. I guess I need to play around with the order rules to see what works and what doesn't. Have you got any pointers?

On our existing (custom built) site we do inform customers after they try to send it, and will need to work out how to achieve this in BVC.

Regards,

Jason

Here is a screenshot of a shipping method that displays the "we can not ship..." message. It's from the new release candidate of Rule Providers, but it is very similar to what you would see if you downloaded the current version:

This method will display the message if any items in the order are in the "Weeds" category. You could use any other criteria you want.

What you can't see in the screen shot is that I moved "United Kingdom" into the list of "NOT Available in..." countries. So this method will only be evaluated if the country is not the UK.

Here's what the customer sees (I also created a second shipping method called Standard Shipping that only applies to the United Kingdom):

I have several sample videos that walk through various scenarios:

If you remember, can you describe your first impressions of the product...especially any roadblocks you ran into? This is still a fairly young product so I'm not sure where the pain points are.

Hi Andy, I've been having a play around with the demo and it seems great... but I do find the whole thing quite confusing! Myabe it's just me... LOL!

Anyway, I set up the rules as described above, and when clicking on Shipping Rates from the basket the prices & methods are displayed correctly after selecting and submitting a country. However, on the checkout page itself when you select a delivery country it does something very odd (maybe it's how i've set it up).

For example: On entry to the checkout, the default counry selected is the UK and the delivery option for the uk is displayed correctly, and the price is displayed correctly in the order summery. If I change the country to the US for example, the delivery options changes to "£9,999.00 - We cannot ship outside the UK", but the delivery charge in the order summary stays the same.

When I revert the country back to the UK, the opposite happens! The delivery options changes correctly to be "3.99 - 2-5 working days", but in the order summary, the delivery charges changes to 9,999.00!!

Any idea what be causing this?

I remember that shipping rates being 1 click behind came up during testing. I thought it was fixed. Have you checked the hot fixes? If it's not there, then contact BV support to see if they have a fix they can send you.
