One of my main objections to BV from the beginning was the inability to "add to cart" from the Category, or Grid Page -- the problem lies in that if you have product choices or modifiers, are you going to have all those displayed on the grid page too? Then your grid gets all out of whack. Sometimes have the ability to add to cart for only those items with no choices, and for those that do a button that says click to purchase. I don't like that kind of "inconsistent look" you get from that. My old software had the abiliity to do that, and it did create a very bad looking grid page/category page.
so I say that to say that doing what you want (and that doesn't even address the rotator issue at all) would be a very complicated and costly piece of work, I would think, and that's why you are not getting any response.
One thing that is sorely lacking here at BV is an adequate number of developers that want to tackle custom work. There are some that will do "design work" on themes and such, but I've seen very little in the way of customization. |

We need Wallace. I don't think he's coming, though. |

Mitch -- to your point, we don't need a whole bunch of messages that say "call me for a quote" and then half the time you don't get a response. |

I've gotten that here, too. A few times. Seems we get a few cries for help each week on the forum from new users that eventually just dry up and go away... that's too bad.
Wallace and a few others made or sold me about 15 mods or pre-made add-ons back then.
There's a long list of really good ideas on the BVC6 thread ripe for the picking. Are really good programmers just not interested, or are the programmers that know the software just not up to putting in the effort for financial or other reasons? |

I think it's because most of us are really busy or have picked our focus and won't stray from it! :)
I don't speak for others but my deterrent has always been long term support. It's a major part of the process and requires way more planning, money and time than providing the actual plugin. Nobody is using the same operating system, all hosts are different, versions of the application are all over the place.
Price the plugin to cover support and it's priced too high. Priced too low and support is left high and dry. Charge support fees and we're the devil for doing so.
Definitely opening the door for a potential battle! LOL...
I applaud Andy Miller for being able to accomplish this. Been doing it before I came around and he keeps getting better and better at it. |

What i did to keep consistency with the "add to cart" button and "details" being displayed only on products that don't have if choices: i created a new button called "Choose Options" for products that have options. That way there are two buttons going down on the detailed list for prpducts without options and with options. As for a grid format, I think the same can be achieved fairly simple, but id have to test it out first. I am no programmer by any means, so if I do get it to work, I can post the code here and see if any programmer has any objections to my "work-around". http://www.medsupplier.com/aeds-and-defibrillators.aspx *I still themeing buttons ;)

Did you ever dig up the code for adding a price button on the prod grid and category page?
Any help would be great!

Anyone have any updated info on this. I would LOVE to have a "Add to Cart" and "Details" button on my category pages.

Hello, We have a add to cart feature here at Resposio that we have coded for some of your clients for both the category grids and product grid for the content blocks. Send us and email and we can see what we can do for you. |

Matt,
I think your synopsis is right on the money. I know that's why we haven't released any commercial add-ons. |

Matt & Aaron,
I can tell you personally and from others I've talked to -- you're losing a lot of potential business by not offering "commercial add-ons" As a small business owner, it's hard to justify paying as much for an add-on as the base package costs, and then you end up with the feeling that you have paid for development time that later on is going to be used to make money off of another customer. If I am going to pony up $500-plus bucks for a customized add-on, then I want exclusive rights to any form of it.
Now, you take that and turn it into a $100 package and I would seriously consider it -- give us 6 months of support and then charge after that. Or even $100/year to license the add-on with support makes more sense -- if I decide to move to another platform in 18 months, I'm not out the $500 spent for the work. |

Hey Joe, no doubt that I'm losing business! But it's not my focus. I design, develop, maintain & promote for a handful of clients that keep me busy 25 hours out of the day.
It's quality before quantity, but I was 99% there with a BV Theme Factory, but the killer was price & support. $99 in 2004 covers very little when a new browser is released in 2009 and that same 2004 customer expects it to work flawlessly in a 2009 BETA version.
Add the customer that likes to fiddle (which I do not disagree with, actually encourage). Since they don't necessarily have a full grasp of CSS, I'm now responsible to spend an hour or two fixing everything that they broke, just to get to the heart of the matter. ummmm.... hey dude, check your HTML before you lambaste me...LOL...
It was an educational 6 months that dictated that a $99 sell price and $100 support license would never cover the time spent on support over lifetime of the theme factory.
If I priced the themes at the correct price of $499 with a proper support license fee, I'd be sitting with 20 themes that never sold.
The time that it would take to support so many browsers killed it and sticking to my service contracts is what has me blistering my fingers. You're correct in saying charge for support, but also factor in that in this theme arena, I can't release a stylesheet and expect it to cover the entire customer base. The theme is set to stock code and I'd be hardpressed to find a single merchant that hasn't touched their code or follow instructions that required the merchant to always use images at defined sizes or other various constraints that will essentially break the theme if not followed.
One could say "just make it liquid", but that's digging the hole even deeper into the support! Additionally, since themes are sensitive, I would need direct access to perform the finishing touches for specific needs. I've been involved in too many threads here where changes are posted back and forth and every time it would've been done in 30 minutes had the keys been handed over.
Add up all the time involved and base it on a $100 support fee. That fee was gobbled up in an hour or so and I'm staring at an extra 6 hours because while I happen be in under the hood, the merchant would always, and I mean always, ask for "just a couple quick changes". Present the bill for it and watch out now...
I could continue my sililoqoy but I hope you see why I chose my model. I'm not offended by your statment, hope you don't see my response as negative towards you!
P.S. I have some sweet domain names available if anybody is interested in creating a BV theme factory...LOL..
P.S.S. charge more for support...LMAO... |

On the flip side though, I have noticed that Satya Vani has started to dabble in the add-on game. I've seen a couple posts where he's created some add-ons. Might serve him well to step up the production :) |
