***** STATUS ON SERVICE PACKS ******

We've had a couple of questions from customers on the status of service packs and bugs in BV Commerce 5. I'd like to address some of the questions and let everyone know about our current plans.

Should I be concerned about bug reports on the forums before purchasing BV Commerce 5?
While it is important to review bug reports when evaluating software please keep in mind that these are customer reports and in most cases we have not yet confirmed whether the report is an actual bug, a feature request or a configuration issue. We have thousands of customers running BV Commerce stores right now without issue. Those reports that do turn out to be actual bugs will be fixed in a timely manner.

Why did service pack 1 come out only a few months after the release of BV Commerce 5?
We work very hard to test our products as much as possible before release. In fact, we run more than 800 automated tests on our code every single day to confirm it is working as expected. However, the nature of software makes it almost impossible to test every single combination of features and options. Our customers setup stores and create modifications that we have no way of testing ahead of time. Service Pack 1 was a collection of small fixes that we had previously released and a few unreleased ones. The Service Pack was designed to make it easier for customers to install the fixes if they had one of the issues.

Are there still bugs in BV Commerce 5? How serious are they?
Yes, there are a few bugs in BV Commerce 5 just like in every other commercial application. In fact, NASA recently reported they had a bug in the Space Shuttle software that delayed a launch. As of today (December 6th, 2006) the bugs that are not resolved are minor issues or have workarounds available.

When will any remaining bugs be fixed?
For some bugs we are able to issue "hot fixes" or workaround instructions almost immediately. We are currently working on bundling up fixes for any remaining bugs and releasing Service Pack 2 in January.

Will Service Pack 2 include any new features?
Service Pack 2 will add Google Checkout in addition to correcting any outstanding bugs. We are also working on a "kitting/bundling" feature which will be included in the next service pack after Service Pack 2.

This is part of what I love about BV. Service packs that don't just fix any bugs that slipped through the cracks, but that often introduce great new features (BVC 2004.5 was a great example of this). Nice work, Guys.

Unsolicited Testimonial: I love this software.

I am not a programmer or developer. I can do a bit of html but I can’t even program efficiently in JavaScript let alone any of the other high tech stuff the guys in this forum are doing.

We are a small service company. Before BV4 our first website was inefficient, insecure, and as a result, our business was highly labor intensive. We investigated how much it was going to cost just to add a shopping cart to that site. BV4 gave us way more in all these areas for way less $. Yes we had a few issues with BV4 but nothing we couldn’t live with.

We heard a lot of good things about BV5 while it was in development. We bought it as soon as it came out. We have been running a test site ever since.

Previously we used the Rain Forest theme. It gave us a nice look and we didn’t have to modify it very much. Guess what? BV5 doesn’t come with Rain Forest. So we had to switch to one that probably has a more modern look.

We are now ready to bring our BV5 site live (as soon as the next migration tool is released). And I did it all by myself. Well, not all by myself. I had help from many of the people posting in this forum. I mean, so far I didn’t pay anyone to get it to this point.

The Strength of BVCommerce is not just the software itself or the innovative approach to programming Marcus and company are using. It is also many of Marcus’s loyal adherents posting in this forum. They answer a lot of questions and provide lot of fixes, modifications and help on how to over come the problems you may encounter.

Noah has helped me immensely, Cliff with his TekGear Redux theme, Andy, Matt and others with their helpful posts.

Is BV5 perfect? No. We still would like a couple more bells on our site. But just looking at BV5’s file structure, even I can see that Mod’s to the program are going to be easy for a developer, familiar with the software, to make. Right now we feel BV5 (with the few issues all software has, new and old) is better and offers more opportunities then BV4.

Where are you going to buy a car that does everything you want it to do for this price and still gets 60mpg?

Here are our 2 sites. The first one will be gone shortly.

Service Pack 2 is coming along very well. We're working very hard to get it out as soon as possible but we also want to make sure that it is rock solid and fixes as many issues as possible. It will most likely be a couple of weeks more before the service pack is ready. As planned, Google Checkout will be included in this service pack.

BTW: We're also working on a new bug tracking page to help everyone view the exact status of every single bug report and download hot fixes as they become available.

Bob,
I agree with you on BV software, it is awsome!
Recently purchased BV Commerce 5 and am now learning the amazing features
it has.
The forums are very informative.
Very pleased my host Noah at Resposio.com took the time to review the
features of BV with me.
Noah is always "RIGHT ON".

We are currently working hard on it and hope to go beta by the end of next week. This could change if we come across any bugs that we think justify pushing the date back. Currently most of the bugs that we are getting down to are minor.

Justin,

This is great news. I purchased BVC5 shortly after it was released and have been working with Cliff at Promotion Sickness to customize our site. We've been holding off on the launch for SP2 and the Google Checkout feature!

Please keep us posted. Beta should be launching anytime now, right?

Thanks,
Josh

We are going to have the first Beta tomorrow. Initially it is going to be put up on the demo stores so that people can just sign up for a demo store and test the SP2 beta code. This will allow users to look over specific functionality without the investment required to download and install the full beta. We will then see how this is going and will release full installs and patches as we ready them.

Thanks,

We do not have a stated release schedule, we will release additional betas as issues are reported and we will release SP2 when we feel that reported bugs have reached an acceptable level.

I have a store that I plan to convert from BV 2004. However, I have been waiting for sp2, as I need the bug on number of items in a category fixed (since I run two stores off of the same inventory, but with some items only available in one and not the other, so I need to disable the items in the other store, and currently in 5 the counts are totally screwed up - the fix is in sp2).

When can I get a test version that I can use with my full set of data? I'm not looking to go live, just test my new store. When you say you are releasing the demo version only in the beta, I'm not sure what that means. What are the limitations of the demo version? Can I still convert my current store and test?

The current beta is only being released as a full install. We are not issuing patches that you can apply to your current store. It is possible that in a later beta we will release patches but not official decision has been made yet.

Maybe I'm just dense. Let me ask this again.

1. Can I use the migration utility to convert my BV 2004 store to a BV 5 sp2 store? I have no problem doing a full install of BV 5 sp2.

2. I do not understand what you mean when you say "Initially it is going to be put up on the demo stores" What limitations does this impose on me for what I am trying to do? (I am trying to convert my old 2004 store, and fully test not only your stuff, but all of my CSS / Master pages / etc)

1) No, not yet, once SP2 goes live, we will update the migration utility to migrate to the SP2 store.

2) The demo store does not apply to you in this case, you will have to get the SP2 full install. The only thing is that the SP2 beta 1 full install will not be patched to later versions. It is for testing only. If you do a SP2 beta 1 install you may not be able to upgrade it to a SP2 release version.

So how do I get data into the beta SP2? I can't upgrade an existing BV 5 store, and can't migrate data from a BV 2004 store. Hard to test with no data.

How about a beta of the migration utility?

We can look into that, but currently we are preparing the patching tools for the second beta.

So how is the beta of SP2 coming? Is it available? Is there a conversion from SP1? Is the migration utility ready yet?
