I'm wondering if I can set up certain categories so specific users can maintain only certain categories' databases.

Admin will have access to all categories, all store settings.

User "B" has access to category "shirts", no other sections or store settings.

User "C" has access to category "pants", no other sections or store settings.

I'm thinking that I can allow suppliers limited access so they can maintain their own part(s) of the store, but not ALL of the store's data.

Possible?

If you come up with something let me know. We could use this as well. Particularly if we could keep it away from the search engines and set it up so the bread crumbs don't track it.

Right now we have unlinked pages and use an html redirect to get to the main page. Then we code the links to the next pages inside the text areas. We have to turn bread crumbs off.

If we could set up a protected area that requires a login, I'm guessing that would also stop the search engines and help secure the information from our competitors.

Mitch and Bob,

Both of these scenarios were easily done in BV2004. I haven't looked at BVC5 yet, but if the basic membership features were carried over then you should be able to do it.

Membership choices (groups) are such as Content Admin, People Admin, Settings Admin. This keeps a shipping clerk out of the People section but I don't see how I can assign user "A" to a specific catalog category.

(in 2004)
create role "privilaged" and assign users.

using aspx
on category page, if category is (one of your privilaged) and user is not "privilaged" then redirect them or give them a message.
do the same on product page if product is a member of a privilaged category and not a unprivilaged.

search page was a little more tricky... but this should get you started.

So each category would have to know which users are "privilaged" and which aren't in order to allow/not allow access and changes.

The best analogy is ebay. As a "buyer", can buy anything in the store, as a "user", I am only "privilaged" to access my small part of the database.

Can be done in BV4 or 5? I have products listed at other's on-line stores, but they have more powerful engines set up for this function in hard code.

in the asp.net code, you can use a bv function to check if a user is a member of a role. I've done this in BV2004, if the current category ID is in a list of restricted IDs then I check to see if the user is a member of the "privileged" role. if not you redirect them somewhere else or display a message to them that then need to log in with sufficient credentials. If the are a member of that role then you let them stay. Using the role system allows you set up more complex restrictions.

If you do something like this I would recommend that you not even display the protected categories in the navigation unless the user is logged with sufficient credentials (unless you want to tease them into joining)

I don't know about BVC5, I haven't looked at it yet.

Mitch, I've worked out a solution for roles based access to restricted categories.

Please call me if you are still looking to do this.
