Two identical products, different buttons on product page

I have two products set up the same, except.... One has one "product modifier" list, the other has one "product choices" list.
On the category page why would one with modifiers have an "Add to Cart" button and the one with choices have a "Details" button??? I can't have a shopper clicking an "Add to cart" button until he sees and makes all of the choices.
Can I make the default button "Details" no matter what choices are offered. Is there something on the product page?
Can I get rid of that button altogether?
I've got a lot of products to enter, I need to get this right.

If the product has features/options/choices/modifiers/sizes/colors or anything else that the user needs to select in order to get the right product, then they should not be able to add to cart prior to making these selections.
getting rid of the button sounds like a workaround to a problem and not a fix. what you suggest above sounds like a bug in the software.

its a bug... i posted the same under the bugs forum.
Origianlly every product pre-SP1 had the add to cart button. Post-SP1 only the product choices were fixed to show the details button... so if your product had a required modifier, it would still show the add to cart button. It should be fixed in SP2.
