Hi,
I'm looking at BV Commerce 5 along with several other systems, and would like some more information on the following to help make a decision.
Our situation is quite different from most online vendors in that:
1/. The vast majority of the products we sell are comprised of several individual products (ie they are packages of products). Is there the ability to create packages of products?
2/. We never (or very rarely) sell directly online as our products are highly expensive and require significant sales person interaction before a sale is made. What generally happens is we will show a packaged product on the website, then people will contact us regarding one or more packages via an online form. The sales person then contacts them back via phone and further customises the package product and sends out a more detailed quote. The customer will hopefully eventually book the package after they have been quited and details discussed with the salesperson.
Therefore can you tell me if:
a) A customer can just submit an enquiry about a packaged product (which will be like a sale pending), the sales person then recieves this like a pending order, where they can alter it, and then send it out as a specific "quote". This quote is recorded for further use and can be subsequently turned into a final sale at a later stage (when they call back the sales person and book on the over the phone).
3/. I did not notice a WYSIWYG editor for text product descriptions etc - is there not one? - or am I missing something?
Thanks

Zee, I'm building my store right now and find that BV5 is as far removed from my current Brand X6 store as a 757 is from a Piper Cub. The abilities and flexibilities in the way products are "built" and presented will allow me to offer products (custom made furniture) that I couldn't offer before. My product line will expand post-BV5 launch. The drawback is that the learning curve goes straight up for a while. 1. Kits are coming: a video... http://www.bvsoftware.co...5/Video/BVC5Kitting.html2. Store-side ordering/editing is discussed at length in the forum. Do a few searches, you'll find the threads. Assigning a "sign-in" for inquiries-pending sales will save the data as the sale is created. 3. There is a WYSIWYG editor for long descriptions (Free Text Box and Markdown). It's toggled at Options > Site Display Settings. I prefer to build a variety of HTML wrappers off-site and cut/paste into the box(es), then add product-specific text. The WYSIWYG editor is limited. In HTML, I can define the space as a table and assign different looks for different products. |

I agree with Mitch. The features in BV5 are remarkable. He is also right, there is a pretty steep learning curve, but you don't have to be a Developer ride that curve.
One of the things I noticed is the software is modular in structure. Once you get the hang of it, it is easy to make minor and sometimes major changes. It is also easy to find professionals in this forum to help you at pretty much any level you want, from free helpful hints to custom development.
Like most good proprietary software, you have to adapt your use to the functions it can perform. Also like most good proprietary software it is relatively user friendly and for the most part actually works when compared to custom designed software.
Also the price is a LOT cheaper then custom designs.
I think I would recommend this software to anyone that wanted a professional looking site; one easy to make periodic changes, even if they had no products to sell. I think I could justify the purchase for a pure information web site.
I would suggest browsing through this forum and start looking at other BV sites (BV4 and BV5) up and running. Then look to see if you think you can adapt it to fit your needs. I think after you work with this software for a while you will be pleasantly surprised.
