Error when BV tries to resize uploaded product images

<SPAN class=errormessage id=ctl00_BvcAdminPopupConent_lblError>When uploading an additional product image via the popup dialog and choosing a resize option, we get the following error:
<SPAN class=errormessage>
<SPAN class=errormessage>Error Code 5003-5 Couldn't Resize Image: The process cannot access the file 'C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\bv5demo\images\products\_1findusmap.jpg' because it is being used by another process.
I've checked file permissions and that's not the issue. How can we solve this?
