How to troubleshoot FedEx shipping not returning rates?

We have worked with FedEx to provide shipping service, and have configured FedEx shipping in the BV admin. However, when we try to 'get rates' from the shopping cart, all we ever see is "$0.00 - To Be Determined. Contact Store for Details". FedEx is trying to help, but they want to see our transaction string, and I don't see any way to expose this from the BV web code so I can give it to them.
I see that there is a 'diagnostics mode' for shipping, but it doesn't seem to do anything, and the documentation doesn't even mention it.
How can I expose the transaction string, and how does diagnostics mode work?

On the dashboard (admin) page, you go to Options, then "Event log" in the upper header bar. With "Fed Ex Diagnostics" turned on, you'll see what Fed Ex gets from the store. In fact, it shows nearly everything going on in the store. Cool page to review once in a while.
To avoid getting "0.00 To be Determined...", you must fill in weight, size, etc., chose a "Ship from" place that is assigned to an origin that has an address (Store, Vendor) and at least test with "Ship separately" chosen. Make sure the store's or the vendor's addy is filled in, and the cart knows where to send to. In setting up Fed Ex, (In Options > shipping), make sure Fed Ex is set in "Available Methods" as an available method, and that Fed Ex is configured with all of your info. Double check this, a missed digit will kill you here.

The The FedEx transaction string (or most of it) is recorded in the Event Log (BV Admin > Options > Event Log) when diagnostic mode is turned on. |

We actually figured out that the problem was that we had not configured our ship from address. It's working now.
