Is this Product/Category setup possible 'out-of-the-box'?

Hi,
Here is how I want to setup my products and categories.
I want the 1st level Category, when clicked on, to display all the sub-categories on the top of the page. I also want ALL the products associated to the 1st level category AND subcategories to be displayed. I also want a dropdown list on each page that displays a list of all distinct manufacturers for the given category chosen (which the visitor can use to filter out the product listings).
Can this be done out of the box?

There is no category template with that design OOTB, but a developer could probably whip one up relatively quickly. |
