Good morning everyone. We have another BV5 site that is about to go live and would love some feedback. Some of you may know MLD Associates (It's one of Rudy's at Rudystoys.com companies) Rudy has been with us for over 10 years now and we have worked on a lot of projects through the years together. This is a brand new site and Rudy's first BV5 site. We made a few customizations on the site for aesthetics and usability. 1. It's a dynamic BV menu that can have any style on any of the links, not just the parents and subs globally. 2. We are pulling product type property data for the grids. 3. Several SEO related mods. The SSL is installed but the domain name isn't pointing yet. Kick the tires around and let us know what you think. http://www.mainepuzzles.comAs always, thanks! |

What a lot of work. Looks fantastic.... I'm not a fan of black backgrounds (makes a shopper's ability to print a page on paper a real PITA on some printers), but WOW! The colors really pop. A quick note.... sub cat "Glow in the Dark" and others that have no listings... I'd like to see a null entry saying to check back soon. A visitor may think the page is loading and sit and wait for products to show up. A minor annoyance. A few puzzles offer a "More Pictures" button, but there aren't any coming up. ie: American Lighthouses Jigsaw Puzzle. Can you kill the button if empty? Clicking on upper banner (the logo) gets me to Network Solutions. IE6 isn't behaving again. See below: I'm coming back to do some Christmas shopping. Thanks Mitch,
I fixed the above issues. That's the bad thing about old browsers. You touch one little thing and eveything is out of whack. I appreciate the comments. The logo at the top has been pointed to mainepuzzles.com. We have yet to set the DNS as we are ironing the final bugs.
And, I fully understand what you are saying about black sites, we had our work cut out for us to make this site as you said "pop" and still be attractive to the buyer.

Thanks Mitch,
Black sites - I totally agree in almost all cases (about 97 out of 100) in this case due to the simple nature of the product (not much reading to do) and the visual nature of the product, the black really makes the products pop.
The catalog is being finalized over the next few days and that should take care of the missing items.
Normally if there are no additional images the button won't show. In the case you showed, one was used but later removed (looks like a gremlin that will take some hunting down).
Fixed the IE6 issue (good find!).
Top logo should work after the domain name is pointing.
This is a brand new site, but if it's like any other Rudy project it should be flying in no time.
Thanks for the feedback! |

Nice hovers on the products on the home page and category page... looks fancy, but I don't see the javascript for it. You'll have to teach me that trick Brendon. I actually think that on this site, the pictures of the puzzles would wash away if the site was the normal white, they appear to be "framed" by the dark grey and the black. One suggestion that I would offer is make the body a dark grey instead of the black. I think it would make the site stand out even more. I like the use of the button hovers in the left navigation and the subs. Makes it very clear the 1st level organization.
Looks good Rudy! Have fun with it. |

You really covered the gamut of how somebody would be looking for a puzzle in a logical manner. Die hard puzzle guys concentrate on the number of pieces....
SEO out the wazoo!! Clever integration :)
My only beef is along the same lines of wanita's comments. A slight gray would be nice. |

Forgot to note earlier: The text is in different colors. I prefer all one color, isn't all the text important? This happens on my site also. It's on my list to fix when I get to it. Grey on white looks bad. ...just me? MitchA attached the following image(s): puzzle-text-colors.jpg (71kb) downloaded 87 time(s).You cannot view/download attachments. Try to login or register. |

I fully agree. I like to see the same colors across the board also. Gray on white can be hard to view IMHO. I always try to put myself in the shoes of someone who cannot see too well. If in question, change it to something that will not make the person guess. |

I don't mind grey on white (Mitch's site). I like the grey on grey on black (Rudy's site). I don't like the dischord between the formal, ascetic looking text (grey/grey/black) and the gaudy buttons (Rudy's site). Is there something on Rudy's site that is making the horizontal scroll bar indicate that I can only see half the content? Design and color schemes are not my strong suit (assuming I have a strong suit) but I do agree with the opinions expressed on the use of Black. I don't like black but it sure looks cool on this site. Especially with the gun metal gray with yellow hover on the product images. It sure stands out, but it may get old after awhile.
You have the off web page body in a black wall paper (I like the design) plus a fairly shinny black background on the page itself. Thats a lot of Black. You might want to try some dark grays or even light grays on the wall paper and/or move to a less shinny black (something other than 000 unless you have already done that) for your main page background.
Buttons:
I would suggest a different "GO" search button (I couldn't find it). Also your "Add to Cart", "More Pictures" and "Wish List" buttons kind of over dominate the product they refer to. Might want to shrink them down a tad.
Product page:
Any way you could put your medium product images on the same Gray background as the product description and the large picture pop up when you hit the more pictures button? They don't have to be in the same gray content block, the image could be on its own gray block, like you have on the home page. Between the very large buttons and the product image on Black, I had trouble connecting the product image to the description. [Ok. I'm looking at the Dusk at Sea Jig Saw puzzle. The board games images all have a white background.]
Your Related Items have a white border. I'm not sure how I feel about that. They actually stand out more than the product right now (at least the Dusk at Sea Jig Saw Puzzle).
What are the age demographics of your customers? If you are looking at say ages 28 and under, a black web site for these products would probably be a very good color choice. I haven't seen any studies on it but I do have a couple kids in that age bracket. If your in the geriatrics market (me) might want to rethink basic black.

Thanks for the heads up on the scroll bar. A little width can go a long way, no pun intended. in my previous post I was thinking vertically. I will take a look at the buttons and possibly size them down a bit. I appreciate the advise. |
