I'm just finishing up the design on my site, updating/adding products, and would appreciate some feedback. This is a temporary URL for the site:

http://www.artechservices.com

I'm hoping to launch in about 2 weeks with the site moving to our regular domain (www.birdsafestore.com) and then I can add the missing applications, such as the Xigla Live Help, News Box, Newsletter Sign-up, etc.

Keep in mind that I'm still working on many of the images; many of them are skewed out of proportion right now.

Our customer base enjoys a "fun" site -- they are a high end niche group of parrot owners that enjoy the graphics (store mascot).

Thanks

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p>[3] [/3]</o:p>

[3]I like the drop-down/slide-out menus, but they look a bit scattered and could be set into neater columns. Also, there is a ghost of the drop down box to the left of the text that upsets the graphic. It looks like RadMenu… I’m not familiar with this one… can’t help.[/3]

<o:p>[3] [/3]</o:p>

[3]I dislike anything on the screen staying ‘flipped’ because I visited, I think it looks sloppy and I know where I’ve been. As a matter of fact, a category I visited a few days ago was flipped to black when I entered again tonight – I really find that odd, but at least I was remembered. In IE6, any item in the menu bar I had clicked on stays dark, FF doesn’t do this – see pics below. Change the #444 to #333 (I think) in the main style sheet to remove the ‘visited’ color if you’d like to change this:[/3]

<o:p>[3] [/3]</o:p>

[3]/* Links */<o:p></o:p>[/3]

[3]a { text-decoration: underline; }<o:p></o:p>[/3]

[3]a:link { color: #333; }<o:p></o:p>[/3]

[3]a:visited { color: #444; }<o:p></o:p>[/3]

[3]a:hover { color: #f90; }[/3]

<o:p>[3] [/3]</o:p>

[3]Also note the difference in the menu bars, IE6 and FF.[/3]<o:p>[3] [/3]</o:p>

[3]Some of the pictures (Rainbow Spray Millet) are a bit crude – I’ve been there… lots to do to get launched, come back to that later.[/3]<o:p>[3] [/3]</o:p>

[3]Returns.aspx, Misc.&gt; Direct ship and Policies.aspx are returning 404 errors.[/3]<o:p>[3] [/3]</o:p>

[3]Fill out your FAQ (Help) with a few common ones. Nobody reads this page, but at least you can say it’s on the site.[/3]<o:p>[3] [/3]</o:p>

[3]There’s a pager (or what looks like a pager) in the middle of the Accessories page. It looks like it doesn’t do anything.[/3]<o:p>[3] [/3]</o:p>

[3]There’s a category page width problem in IE6, see pic below. I think if you change 545 to be a bit narrower… (this may not work in a theme based on TexGear Redux) Try it anyway. One pixel cleared this up in Painted Paper for me.[/3]

<o:p>[3] [/3]</o:p>

[3]/* Category Styles */<o:p></o:p>[/3]

[3]#categoryleft { width: 175px; float: left; margin: 0 10px 0 0; }<o:p></o:p>[/3]

[3]#categorymain { width: <B style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal">545px</B>; float: left; } [/3]

<o:p>[3] [/3]</o:p>

[3]If more than a few of your products have a few pictures, get SmartView. Much better than the BV5 standard ‘more pictures’.[/3]

<o:p>[3] [/3]</o:p>

[3]Re: Adventure Pack… I don’t see the need to place (Direct Ship) in the product’s name. It shows up in the browser’s bar, and Google will pick this up.[/3]<o:p>[3] [/3]</o:p>

[3]Can you just add a “DS” to the SKU if it’s got to be tagged as a drop ship item? Perhaps you could call it “Adventure Pack Bird Carrier”.[/3]

<o:p>[3] [/3]</o:p>

<o:p>[3]Food/Treats &gt; Pellets &gt; Foundation Formula is mis-spelled. (Not poking sticks in your cage, it just jumped out at me --- get it?)[/3]</o:p>

<o:p>[3][/3]</o:p>

[3]I like the colors and graphics. Nice. Keep it up.[/3]

<o:p>[3] [/3]</o:p>

<o:p>[3] [/3]</o:p>

Thanks Mitch! Great feedback -- I really need to address the IE6 issue -- I can't for the life of me find that site that lets you see your site in various browsers/versions. I think I need to play with the contentwidth and widecontentwidth, but I need to have a IE6 version to test with.

So much to do ... so little time!

I suggest reducing the width of your drop down and slide out nav menu. Seems to be a lot of empty space at the end of the name. I know some of the names are longer then others but even the longest name has a fair amount of white space at the end. You might want to check to see what happens when the nav menu name is longer then the space available to put it in. Does it wrap?

I'm also use to clicking on the site logo to get back to the home page. Your hot spot is higher then your logo. It looks like your using Cliffs TekGear theme. Can you make the hot spot bigger or move it down a bit?

Firefox has a few free utilities that adds a bar with some dynamite tools... edit css, edit source, outline tables/cells, etc. There may be something similar for IE6, I should get it if there is.

A bunch here:

You've got to design for IE6 and IE7 first, then the others. 18 months of stats on my last site shows most people use IE (almost 5 to 1 ratio). The magazines say the average PC in use is three years old and is running the software that came with it. It's a mystery to me that most programers use the latest browsers with all the bells and whistles to test their designs. I had to go to my mom's place to try my site on Win 2000. - I've ordered her a new PC -

I've yet to find an emulator so I can see how my site runs in IE5 and others. On my SF6 site nearly every error message I recieved said the browser was IE5. Makes you wonder what the 'real' people see whan they visit your site.... and the trouble they're having that I don't know to test for.

I beleive if you need to dumb-down your site and cut out some bells and whistles, so be it. We're running business web sites, not vanity sites.

Browsercam will take screenshots of your site with various browsers / operating systems / resolutions, which you can review. I've never used it, but many people swear by it.

If you would like a more hands-on approach, you can use one of the Internet Explorer Application Compatibility VPC Images. These are pre-built Virtual PC images with Windows XP SP2 and either IE6 (if you have IE7 already installed) or IE7 (if you have IE6 installed). This is the way Microsoft recommends running both IE6 and IE7 on the same machine.
