Two issues... data and www/

A file in my 'themes' folder got whacked over the weekend. Many thanks to Noah for reloading his backup. I should be a bit more pro-active about this....

How do you do it? How often? What tools are available to do this behind the scenes (auto) other than our hosts' routine schedule?

Mitch,

For $10/month I get a nightly total server backup at my host -- recently saved me with an affiliate program that I got screwed up.

I also use Norton Ghost on my local machine to do regular backups -- assuming of course I have copied my remote files to my local drive they are then backed up that way too.

Mitch, give us a call and we can give you some good ideas. That aside, you bring up some good points.

From one hosts perspective,

Unless specifically contracted I don't know of a single host in the world that is "responsible for your data". So this is something to keep in mind for all of you that use a hosting company. You should always have a copy of your data recent enough to be happy with a rebuild using it.

We specialize in ecommerce hosting so we decided long ago that backing things up would be part of what was provided. We maintain large file servers to do it and we do it on shared as well as dedicated servers and you see this reflected in our pricing. However we don't guarantee client data unless it's specifically contracted. When it is contracted we provide three copies with at least one off site.

On a single site (high volume) backup routines can be thousands of dollars/mo. With small stores you can have reliable solutions for under 100/mo. This really should be in every merchants battle plan.

Let me leave you with this chilling thought - The hosts facility disappears overnight! What would you do in the morning? And if you had nothing, how long and at what cost would it take you to build it again?
