Is it possible from the admin to alter the product page layout. Mainly, move the description. We have some long descriptions and i don't like where is is currently at. It would need to be moved under the photo or lower. Would this be part of the theme layout or where with the files? Source code needed?

Sorry for all the questions, just getting an idea of what i can and can't do, and if we need the source code. I don't think we do.

Also, when creating new product or just with a product in general. If i add that product to a Sub-catagory. Do i also need to add it to the root?

Thanks Again

Dont need the source.

Modify product.aspx in the product template that you decide to use.
its in site\bvmodules\producttemplates\xxx\product.aspx

I have moved things around example moved title and description above the picture on bvc2004 inventory template, and changed the related items to vertical under both picture and price section.

you dont need to add it to root. the choice is yours.

You can add the product to 1 or more categories.
Ex:
Category
Mens
bracelets
Plain

If you add it to only Plain, when theuser goes to Mens or bracelets they wont see the item. I prefer that, this way you show a picture of category. But when they go to Plain thats when they see the items.

If you add it to Plain, bracelets and Mens, then when user goes down your category sub category - they will see the product. It may make sense to do it in some cases.

But you will have to manually add them to each category. Or if could be done in a script with one update statement.

Ok. So i would be able to open the file and make some changes in the layout. That is good to know. I can do that, as long i don't have to do any new coding. HTML isn't to bad. I'm guessing i can use Frontpage as i do now with our current software?

That is what i was thinking on the categories.

Thanks

As long as you know HTML you should be able to figure out the asp tags.

Basically all the tags are in table - tr td tags, so you should be able to move them around.

Categories ??? are shown dynamically. You dont change anything in code. What ever categories you create from admin are stored in db, and are picked up by categories. No hardcoding is needed.

Dan, Firefox has some great add-ons that allow you to see tables, lables, headers, fonts, etc., so you can get a clue as to how to change what. You may also edit in real time your css file and the HTML so you can (for the most part) see what will happen when you make a change. Nothing goes back up the pipe, so when you screw up, only your browser knows about the mess you've made.

These are great tools for spying on other's css files too. I've picked up plenty of useful info that way.

Dan, Have a look here:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/60

This adds a tool bar that adds 50 or more tools to the browser. FireFox and this tool only edit what's on the screen, it won't FTP changes back to the server (at least I've never done it). You can look at site's anchors, div order, table layouts, etc. A shot of this page showing tables and table cells outlined and Anchors labeled looks like (below).

It's a bit of a mess, but if you need to see what's what behind the scenes, it's a great tool.

Editing this page's css looks like the one on the right: (great for testing font size, borders, etc)

For Firefox, I'd recommend Firebug and/or Web Developer. You can make changes in real time to test before making the actual changes, if you like, but you can't actually use them as editors.

I'd recommend using something like the free Visual Web Developer Express instead of Frontpage, especially when working in BVC5 or any other .Net 2.0 app. Frontpage hasn't been up to snuff for a few years now.

Brushing up on valid XHTML will also be helpful, since that's the Doctype you'll be working with. A basic understanding of CSS will go a long way, as well.
