I'm wondering if someone can explain how this works to me. I found out something very interesting.
I had a product named "Volkman's AS Canary - 2 pounds" -- and I wanted to change the name to drop the "AS" as it's not really useful to most customers, and I believe that having "Volkman's Canary" show up in the search engines would be more beneficial.
What was interesting -- and cool -- is that the actual URL created from the previous name (with the AS) still worked! I was worried that stored URLs in search engines with the "AS" in the name would no longer work, but they do. Why is that? And what implications does it have on product naming? Is the search really based on the SKU (which is at the end of the URL)? and everything else is like a wildcard?
After only 6 weeks with BV5 most of my products on Google are in the top 5 -- which is incredible -- and I'm not even using custom URLs with them (which I also wonder how that would impact the search engines if I changed it).

Joe, If you don't use urls rewriting your urls contain the bvin of the product so any changes to the details of the product will not influence the search engine results. If you use rewriting the SKU at the end of the url is the important bit. If you change that one your product will not be found anymore by the search engine. The product name is ignored when the url is translated in the website.

Corneliu is correct. For URL rewriting we ignore the product name part and only look at the SKU which is at the end of the URL. Changing the name won't break anything.
