The last few days, I've been getting 50% of my orders with 0.00 for shipping.

EVERY time I place a test order, shipping charges calculate and show on the invoice. I don't get it. I use Fed Ex Ground & Shipper and I haven't changed anything in months. I looked at my setup, it looks correct. A wholesale client placed 3 orders back to back minutes apart. 2 calculated shipping, 1 did not. I repeated the 'bad' order, shipping calculated just fine. Is it Fed Ex???? Me??? Anyone else having this problem with Fed Ex? UPS? USPS? Is this a cookie problem?

Would a few of you make a test purchase to see if I'm just not kicking off the problem from my computer?

Buy anything and enter "test" in the PO feild so I can spot the fake orders. (I really need to stop fixing this website.) Soon.

Thanks.
One other thing.... If I empty the cart and sign out, turn off my computer and change my name, move to Peru and place an item in the cart and go to the checkout page... even with NO address entered, I see a value for shipping. How is this possible? I haven't entered a ship-to address yet. Is there any way on God's green earth for me to enter my site and pretend I've never been there before - y'know, like for testing things like shipping charges, coupon uses, one-time sales?

I know the cookie thing has been discussed at length, but I'm really not sure I like any information surviving from one user's session to the next. Looks like enough is staying behind to allow shipping to be either calculated or assumed. I really have no way to sign on as a member of a price group and be confident I'm seeing my site behave as it should for him, or for me. Or do I?

I think it is FedEx. Is anything about FedEx recorded in the Error Log?

Update 1: You can probably use an Order Rule Provider to protect against this...I'd have to experiment to know for sure, but I thinking a rule like, If Rate From "FedEx Ground" equals 0, Cost = Rate From "UPS Ground". I know you don't actually ship via UPS, but the rates are pretty close...certainly closer than 0.00.

Update 2: I confirmed that you can do this (create a simple Order Rule or Package Rule shipping method that encapulates the FedEx rate with a backup). Here is a picture of the one I tried,

This works because an empty list of rates (such as when FedEx hiccups) is treated as the value 0 in the comparison.

You can also use the same pattern to call FedEx twice (with the hope that the second time will work if the first fails). Normally wrapped rates are cached so that in comparisons like this the carrier is only called once. But if no rates are returned they are not cached. So a rule like...

When Rates From "FedEx Ground" is equal to 0, Cost = Rates From "FedEx Ground" x 1

For all remaining orders, Cost = Rates From "FedEx Ground" x 1

...will actually give you two chances to call FedEx. If the first call works, then those rates are used and you don't have to wait for a second. But if the first call fails, FedEx is called again. Unfortunately, if the second call fails, you will still get 0 shipping.

Very interesting thread -- Andy, great fix for this issue -- I say interesting because I have had a couple of orders over the past couple of days that included Drop Ships and the additional shipping charge (all orders were FedEx) were not added in, it was as if BV treated all items as coming from our store. Yet, when I tried, it worked fine.

The other thing I suspected was that I had created a FREESHIPPING offer that was set to only allow one use (and required the use of a code) -- and I don't know about anyone else, but I have found -- and I hope it is fixed in SP3 -- that setting an offer to 1 use per customer or 1 use per store does absolutely nothing, it can be used infinitely. the only thing that stops an offer is an expiration date. I deleted that offer and I haven't seen the shipping problems since.
