SSL - does brand really matter to customers?

With enormous differences in price between Verisign and the others I wonder is it worth it? Have any store owners here experienced a decrease/increase by using one brand over the other? Obviously Verisign has huge name recognition.

I buy on websites all the time, I couldn't care less what they say they have, as long as I see the http's' before hitting the button. To make difference, a shopper would have to research each to find the differences and avoid the sites that use the 'bad' ones. Not likely.
There are so many icons, graphics, links, spoofs, etc. now, I'd have trouble spotting a fake, and/or the sites that just use a pasted on graphic, wouldn't you?
I ran another store for 18 months and now this one for about 6 months, I've yet to have anyone even ask where my little graphic is let alone what protections are used.
Has anyone ever gotten an inquiry and answered in order to get the sale? |

Mitch I'd have to agree. I think we're just going to renew with the stock 128b for now. If in the next year we feel the need to go with an EV SSL we'll do it, but I think it's an outrageous expense for small stores. I'd rather put that money towards promotions.
How is RapidSSL for price? What are you using now Mitch?

If you listen to surveys - and I've done quite a few-- brand names do make a difference -- Hacker Safe means something to customers, as does BBBOnline. what makes the biggest difference is having a dedicated SSL -- when a customer sees the URL change to some other site/URL, they get real nervous. As a customer, I try and avoid shared SSL -- not that I don't think it's secure, I think it shows a lack of commitment by the vendor -- I mean, come on -- It's only $100 a year! |

I trust Marcus, <edit... I meant Noah> he's got me on a SSL, $100.00 IIRC... I'd have to look back at last year's paperwork to find it.
I'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference between a site that has Hacker Safe security, and a site that just says they do. Like the UL seal on (or not on) a toaster oven, these kinds of images fade into the static. |

What I was mainly wondering is the new EV SSLs (that turn the IE bar green) versus Verisign SSL versus Rapid SSL, Thawte etc which are generally less money.
How much does hacker safe typically run?

I dont think turning the address bar green is worth the extra cost-- I doubt many customers pay attention to it.
Hacker Safe runs anywhere from $200 a year to $1200 a year, depending on where you get it. If you have a host or someplace else that has an affiliation, you generally get a better deal on it. I initially paid $1200 the first year, but then fell into some deal when they merged with another company and now only pay about $150 a year -- I don't know how, I just don't complain about it! :-) |

I don't think it matters too much and not worth the money.
However, I just want the Verisign logo because it matches my site better and I think the green address bar would look cool, so I hope to splurge next month, lol! |

I agree an average customer doesnt know the difference. I have had some stores with no ssl (temporarily) and still seen orders which tells me some people dont even know about a Secured. Check out Comodo certificate, it provides a nice side logo with hover feature. If you hover over it, it shows user some details about your company. Check it on - http....com I personally do prefer to see a ssl , hacker guardian, bbb logos when I do choose smaller vendors online. Having verisign or extended ssl tells me a that i am dealing with a reputed safe company doing enough business to be able to afford it. We are an partner/affiliate with Comodo and Geotrust and I can pass most of the discount to you. Let me know if anyone needs better pricing at [email protected] |

Use caution with the EV certs. In the last year we have had at least 30 clients order/install it and in ALL but one case it has been removed and replaced with the standard cert.
Older browsers will throw errors in some cases and not work at all in others. |

I've got a Comodo Cert from Resposio on my site and have the trust logo on the secure pages, along with a authorize.net badge on the cart/checkout pages. I'd just assume not put them on the front page, but wonder if it's likely to help. www.arcmotiv.com |
