Any way to limit attempts to use a credit card?

I received an order this am that includes 5 failed attempts on a Mastercard. The order finally went through on a Visa, one try.
I don't see any way to limit the number of attempts on the same card - maybe a "Three strikes, yer out, try another card or phone it in" message is needed.
I'm thinking he was fishing for an expiration date.... Could he have gone on to 10, 20 tries???
BTW, he sent an email that he'd rather use the M/C instead of the Visa... could I call him so I can try it again.... Yikes! |

It sounds like you're looking for something on the BV side of the transaction. On the Credit Card processor side, we have our fraud check set at 10 or 20 min. If a credit card number fails the first time (wrong expire date) it will deny any other attempts until it resets.

Yes -- really a gateway issue as they are the ones validating the card -- and I found out that you need to have the fraud prevention in place because otherwise your gateway will shut your processing down for half an hour or more if someone is slamming you with invalid authorizations. |

I think it is more of a fraud issue. If you get someones credit card statement out of the trash, where is the best place to go determine the expiration date? It wouldn't take very long to try all the possible combinations.

In this case the customer checked out. A returning client from years ago.
I have heard of thieves testing (guessing) exp dates and CVV codes on cart sites, going from site to site. Once the order goes through they know the numbers and use the card elsewhere.
I had a two week old card used in Florida at a Pizza hut for $262.00 and the next day at a KFC in NJ for $300.00. No harm done, but it was a PITA. |
