Is Flash becoming the de-facto graphics delivery platform? I'm seeing more and more sites using Flash as the engine of choice on a site's pages. Sirius has almost 100% of it's home page plastered with Flash imgs. http://www.sirius.com/ This looks great.. How much extra work is involved getting this done - aside from creation of the images themselves? How can a more stable flash environment be added to BVC5? (I still can't get a simple content block to rotate a few images) |

If you care about search engines I wouldn't use flash for anything other than some nice videos or "glitter."

The sirius home page is interesting. There are some keywords in the header, but that's it. The body is just a series of flash objects.
The other pages on their site that I checked are full of text and links. They appear to have made a concious decision to make the home page shiny.
There was a very interesting post in the BOS forum today from someone that has been experimenting with above-the-fold placement aimed specifically at different browser resolutions (i.e. at 800x600, 1 product is entirely visble). He experimented with which product went above the fold and got the best results (most increase in total sales) by choosing the product that does not rank well in search. His theory is that the products that ranks well in search links to inside pages, so there is less benefit placing it on the home page, where very few people will see it.
The same theory would explain why a flash home page may be a good option, as long as your product pages are searchable and rank well.
Another theory is that the sirius home page is really a portal (for people that are already customers) and the inside pages are for everyone else. |
