Is there a way to retrieve the inventory of a product on an order at the time the product was ordered?

Even something as simple as a true/false of whether enough product existed for a particular lineitem when the order was placed would be nice. Currently the only way I see this being possible is to retrieve the current inventory of a product and adjust it based on the orders placed between the current time and the order in question, a pretty intensive task.

If anyone knows a better method, I am all ears.

Are you speaking from a customer viewpoint or the merchant? I'm assuming merchant since the customer can tell inventory levels easily. If you had one available and one was ordered, would it not show zero (or -1 if two were ordered)? Maybe I'm not understanding what you are trying to accomplish, unless you are wanting something printed on the order that shows "1 Ordered, 3 Available"

Caplink,
Not sure if it helps, but I wrote a small workflow task that moves the order to a new state "Can be shipped" if there is enough stock when the order was paid.
When I look at the orders, I'm prety sure that I can deliver everything it's in "Can be shipped" state.

Corneliu.

Hi Corneliu,

That is exactly the process that we currently have setup for our clients now. However, the problem we have is that for a couple of our customers it is not uncommon for them to sell out of a product over a weekend if they receive 20-30 orders for something especially when running a special. What ends up happening is that the automated "move to ready to ship" process does not work as when these 20-30 orders are processed the item on the order is currently out of stock even though it was in stock when the product was ordered. This is why I am looking for a way to find the stock status of an item at the time of purchase.
