I am wanting to upgrade from 5.3 to 5.4 but want to be sure about the process. Also I have a fair bit of customization done...will this upgrade disrupt any custom tables already in the db?

Well i tried "upgrading" and it wipes out my entire database LOL. Good thing i set everything up locally.
