Affiliate theme gets STUCK on previously visited affiliate site. How do i fix this?

I have recently been really exploring the affiliate theme capabilities fo BVCommerce and they are great. One issue i can't seem to fix is this: I have multiple sites at GoDaddy (lets use www.EXAMPLE.com as our example) that forward to http://www.mysite.com/default.aspx?affid=EXAMPLEIf someone visits www.example.com, they are forwarded to www.mysite.com BUT because if the affiliate tag in the link, they see the EXAMPLE theme. This is perfect. They see the EXAMPLE.com logo, color scheme, ets... Up until this point things are working splendidly..... but here is the problem. If that same visitor, then goes to www.mysite.com, they are unable to get away from the www.example.com theme, so now they are very confused as they went to www.mysite.com yet it still appears to them that they are at www.EXAMPLE.com. I think I saw a post on this at one point but cannot for the life of me find it, and I wasn't even sure if it would fix my problem anyways. If anyone has any help on this one, I am all ears. I understand what you're saying, but I don't think that the behavior you describe makes sense. For example, let's say that I first go to your affiliate site, www.example.com, which forwards me to your site. I find a product that I like and then bookmark. In the scenario that you described, when I later follow this bookmark, I would see the theme for your site (www.mysite.com) not the affiliate theme, which is what I saw when I bookmarked the site. Hopefully you're following the logic. |

The affiliate system has an option to favor old or new affiliates upon arrival. The problem is that when going directly to your site without an affiliate link the last affiliate is cookied. It almost sounds like you want to remove the affiliate cookies.
What would happen if a customer visits "Example's" link first and then two days later types in your URL directly to purchase? Do you give "Example" the credit for the sale? Why shouldn't the customer see the same branding they did upon first visiting the store?

Ha! Thanks guys.
Let me try to explain this again, it is a tough one. ;)
I currently have my site set to favor new affiliate. In response to Marcus, if customer visits EXAMPLE website they actually go to example.com, which is re-directed and domain ghosted to mysite.com. If that customer goes directly to mysite.com 2 days later, I need them to see MYSITE logo and theme, and I do NOT want EXAMPLE to get credit for the sale.
Also, to address Aaron's question about bookmarking the site and returning later.... since this is a "ghosted" domain, you cannot bookmark (or see for that matter) any custom page on the site.
Hope this makes sense and you guys can help me fix this. ;)

Hmmm, sounds like you might have to explicitly set the cookie domain to disallow mysite.com but allow example.com and all of your affiliates. Could be tricky. What about settings up a new web site on a different IP that points to the same database? It would act as the same site but since it's on it's own domain it wouldn't share cookies with mysite.com

Unfortunately I don't think there is way I can have the affiliate sites on a different IP, as I simply have the domain forwarded to mysite.com.
What if I forwarded mysite.com to mysite.com?Affid=mysite (where mysite uses the affiliate theme I want to use.)
Would this screw up my SEO or would google frown on this forward?

The problem I see is that I wouldn't want my domain name to be indexed by search engines with the affiliate ID in the name. |
