can a product choice be made "required"

I have fields/drop downs that are required to be completed or selected but have to use "modifiers" instead of choices since they can be set to "required". Is this possible with "choices"

Going off memory here, but I thought choices were implicitly required since each choice combination maps to a SKU. Meaning, the choice IS the product whereas a modifier acts on a product.
