Is it possible to send the email receipt to the customer only if the credit card or paypal transaction was successful?

On our client's site, when a customer's credit card transaction fails, they are sent to the Receipt page and given a message that there was an error while attempting to process their credit card and to call to complete their order. I believe this functionality was requested our client and we customized accordingly, but I did not work on that and the developer who did has moved on. The problem is that the customer is receiving an email Receipt when this happens and it is causing confusion as the email looks as if the order was successful. Can I simply make some adjustments to the Process New Order workflow? Perhaps move the "Send Email to Customer" to the Payment Complete workflow instead? Or will some custom programming be required?

The Payment Complete workflow would achieve this, but this workflow is only run after an order is marked 'paid'. So, if you're authorizing the credit card during checkout the email would not be sent until you captured the funds. If you're capturing the funds at checkout this would have the desired effect.

Note that you can also configure the "Receive Credit Cards" workflow step to give the user an error on the checkout page if the credit card is declined thus preventing the order from actually being placed. See the link below for details:

Thanks so much for the reply, the cards are being captured at checkout so this adjustment worked great!
