Taking an item out of stock (but keeping item on store)

We'd like to take an item out of stock but still show the item on the site (so search engines can continue to see the page). I enabled inventory, but it's disabled on a product level. I went into the item that was out of stock, enabled inventory, set levels to 0, then set the dropdown to "Show as out of stock (so not allow orders)." When I save it, the item disappears from the site. How can I keep the item on the site? |

See if this works: Dashboard>Options>Inventory>Disable Inventory(Un-Check) and New Products (Check) Product level>Product active (Check) Inventory>Out of Stock 0>Reorder>0>Drop Down>Show as Out of Stock(Do Not allow orders) |

Hi Rudy,
I tried this but it didn't work. The item is still not being shown on the site. Any other ideas? |

If you key in the search box on your site the SKU you assigned to the item does it respond to the search? |

I do see it when I search for the item, but not in the general browse path in the category page. |

It is -- it shows until I enable the inventory on the item level. |

From the edit product screen: Is the correct display template assigned? |

Are there any variations to this product? |

Yes -- there are two sizes to choose from. |

I did notice that when I take an item with no product variations out of stock, it works properly. It's just the items with variations (which is 90% of them for my client) that have the issue. |

Does each variation have it's own SKU? |

In the master SKU click on the inventory from the left hand navigation. Do the unique Variation SKU's show up separately there? |

Rick, What service pack version are you running. We recommend version 5.4 and we also just released a hot fix for the inventory edit page here. Also, under Options->Performance turn OFF product caching if you're using a version below 5.4. This can cause the product to be held in memory with strange inventory results.
